A trip to Europe is always filled with chaos, drama and unexpected events.. or in this case non-events.
After a night stopover in Gstaad after the Austrian Open, we stuffed our little Rav-4 with luggage until it was almost bursting, then set off to Laax for the European Open. We made a quick stop at the Zurich airport to pick up Charis, our photographer and filmer, then another stop at the Volkl factory to pick up skis for JF, then finally made it to Laax in time to settle into our ghetto style accommodation. I think there were 8 of us in a one bedroom apartment!
Girls chair at training
The first day of training on the course passed by with no issues. Qualifying for slope-style was the following day and this is where the event began to go downhill. The girls were slotted in at the very end of the day after 80 boys had already shredded up the course. The light was flat, landings icy and the wind began to pick up. I was lucky enough to be pre-qualified, but stayed to watch my friends compete. The girls skied as best they could in the bad conditions but I witnessed a fair amount of knuckling and nasty crashes. My good friend Kim Lamarre was carted off the course with a broken arm after not making the landing due to high winds.
The third day training was scheduled for the finalists, but heavy fog made it impossible to hit any of the jumps. We ended up hiking the rail features for four hours.
Day four was finals day for slope-style. We all made our way up to the course, but after waiting around for what seemed like eternity, we were told that the event had to be cancelled due to high winds and poor visibility. It was a good call as conditions were way too dangerous to jump, but everyone was super disappointed.
Hiking
To replace the slope-style event, a rail jam was organised down in the village. Rails are fun while shredding round on the mountain, but standing in line for 15 minutes to hit a bar of metal, then repeating that process for 2 hours is not. I found it all a little frustrating. This feeling soon passed after a beer and a boogie with my friends at the outdoor concert.
