“Choose your journey based on your abilities! Make sure you’re prepared; that will give you a good sense of mastery and allow you to - live to play another day!” - Jørgen Aamot
Where are you originally from, and why did you choose to move to Hemsedal?
I have always lived by the mountains and my upbringing was in the small mountain villages, Geilo and Oppdal. In 2001 I was offered a job as a teacher at an outdoors school in Hallingdal, and I worked there for five good years. Since 2006 I’ve run my own business as a mountain guide based in Hemsedal.
What’s the greatest joy about living in Hemsedal?
Definitely the short distance between my home and nature, as it enables me to cultivate my interests and work.
I can go ski touring, ice climbing, mountain climbing, sports climbing, trail running and cross country skiing without even having to get in the car.
That’s really something!
Hemsedal is also centrally located in southern Norway with short distance to western Norway and Jotunheimen where I work part-time.
In addition, I have literally grown up in a ski resort and to have a proper ski resort nearby is almost as a criterion for choosing a
place of residence... Although I am mostly in the mountains for work now and don’t have as much time to ski for my own sake anymore,
it enhances quality of life for me to have the opportunity for a full day of off-piste skiing when conditions are good.
“An important portion of my life is being outdoors in different ways, all year round.”
Do you still find the same joy in everything you do?
Yes absolutely, an important portion of my life is being outdoors in different ways, all year round. After all, I have chosen a job with an outdoor office - and my own outdoor life has not been at the expense of working life. Still, I have many plans and dreams about various trips and projects I want to accomplish. My two sons have gradually grown so big that we do things together more like peers. In the long run, it is I who must try to keep up with them in the outdoors. It gives me great pleasure!
